One of my favourite things back in Belgium is the Wednesday morning market. I just love the atmosphere over there – the smell of spices, olives, fresh bread, the bright colours of fruits, and the beautiful flowers. I’m addicted to cooking and everything involved around food! This morning was quite overcast (yes, normal beautiful rainy summer day in Belgium haha :p) but still decided to go to the market with my mom.
Our first stop was “Le pain quotidien” bakery for a delicious breakfast. A friend shown me this place last year and it has been my favourite breakfast spot since then. The food there is all organic and fresh, jut what I like. This morning I had the Detox breakfast – nice soft boiled egg, yogurt and fruits, gluten free bread and green tea. P-E-R-F-E-C-T.
Despite the rain we still walked around the market and bought some organic honey made by a local producer. It reminds me of the honey my grandfather’s cousin used to make when I was a kid. It’s funny how the taste of some things we eat when we are kids never goes away.
Is it me or it is just nearly impossible to find sourdough bread in Belgium? I have been looking for it everywhere since I came back and finally found some today at a bakery stall. Sourdough bread is supposed to be one of the bests for you if you are into clean eating – it is easier to digest and with low GI. What’s more, lactic acid bacteria found in sourdough bread produce antioxidants, the cancer-preventive peptide lunasin, and anti-allergenic substances (which may help treat auto-immune diseases).
Well this one was nothing even close to the American sourdough bread I tried but it still tasted pretty good.
As the rain was starting to get really heavy we ended up our morning at an EXKI cafe for a nice cup of organic coffee/hot chocolate.
Over to you now… Do you like going to the market? Do you have a favourite breakfast spot? What is your favourite stall? Do you know any spot in Belgium where I could find some nice sourdough bread?
