When people ask me questions about working out, being fit and healthy, I find that the two questions that comes up the most are “How do I motivate myself to workout?” and “How do I stay motivated?”. Are you also asking yourself these questions? The key word is MOTIVATION. But how to get this motivation and how to keep motivated all along your journey.
I think the first thing to ask yourself is why do you want to get fit and healthy? You must have something that motivates you, a goal. Try not to do it only for other people; your motivation has to come from yourself, as something you want to do for you body, your wellbeing, etc.
Then divide your end goal into SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound) goals. For example, if your final goal is to lose 10 pounds (around 5 kg), set a goal of losing 2 pounds (1 kg) a week (or two). This will help you see you progress in details and also keep your motivation up as you see yourself reaching small goals in a short-term period.
Try to join a community, a group of people with the same kind of goals. Think about joining a gym and participating to it’s group fitness classes. Internet is full of online communities where people motivate each other to achieve their goals. Find some support wherever you can, even within your family, friends, etc.
Avoid negativity! Avoid hanging to much around people who have absolutely no interest in being healthy or would discourage you to achieve your goal. Keep a positive mind. Believe in yourself! Tell yourself that you are capable of reaching your goals!
Make and take time to workout. I know we all have busy life and don’t think we can fit anything else in our schedule but make your workouts a priority. They don’t have to be hours long, even 30 min a day will benefit you. Write them on your agenda as if they were important meetings… important meetings with yourself.
One thing we see everywhere on the internet is the “before-after” photo. Yes, it works, it is important to document your progress (I am not saying that you have to share them all over the web) but it is such a great way to notice the changes that occurred to your body. Weighting yourself is also a good way to keep track of your progress. But don’t weight yourself every single day as it can be discouraging at first, so keep it down to once or twice a week.
Don’t forget to reward yourself when you reach little goals too, be kind to yourself!
